George Richard Chamberlain (born March 31, 1934) is an American actor who appeared in the television show Dr. Kildare and in several popular miniseries, including Centennial, Shogun, and The Thorn Birds.
He was a teen idol in the 1960s, but came to dislike fame-seeking in Hollywood and and turned to the theater, finding success in England among British audiences. Following his miniseries, he retired to Hawaii. He came out at age 69 in his biography entitled Shattered Love which describes how he felt he had to hide his sexuality in order to have an acting career.
