Survivor is a rock band formed in 1978 by Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan. Jim Peterik was the former lead vocalist in the band Ides of March. Dave Bickler, Gary Smith and Dennis Johnson were temporary members, until they were replaced by Stephen Ellis and Marc Doubray.
They are mostly known for their hit "Eye of the Tiger", which became the theme song for the motion picture Rocky III in 1982. Sylvester Stallone asked Survivor to write that song. "Eye of the Tiger" stayed on the Billboard charts for about six weeks making it their first smash hit.
In 1983, Dave Bickler resigned from the band because of medical problems; Jimi Jamison, former member of the band Cobra, took his place after he left.
Their songs "High On You" and "The Search Is Over" gave them more fame in 1985. They also wrote the song "Burning Heart" as the theme song to Rocky IV in 1985.
In 1989, Survivor disbanded.
In 2004, a Starbucks television commercial for their Double Shot espresso beverage debuted. It featured Survivor following a man named Glen, singing a modifed version of "Eye of the Tiger" while he did his day-to-day tasks. This commercial has gained a number of fans, and remains quite popular even though it no longer can be seen on the air.
